Hi, there! I’m glad you found your way to my blog. My name is Emma Sausman and I am currently studying my final year of BA (Hons) English at Bournemouth University. I think I can speak for all students when I say this year was a not exactly what I expected. It almost pains me to say that I have nearly reached the end of my first semester without stepping foot into Fire Station on a Friday night. Which if you’re a fellow Bournemouth student, you can share the pain.

But anyway, lets not dwell. Before Coronavirus put us into a worldwide lockdown I was lucky enough to spend 10 months working as an intern at Jargon PR, a PR agency helping technology and corporate businesses grow. It was during this time that I had my first interaction with the press. This ranged from national titles to start-up technology publications. Although, no matter the range in readership, I learnt very quickly that journalists are extremely busy people. So, I had to adapt myself and learn from my co-workers how to efficiently reach out to journalists in order to create a maximum engagement in a short space of time.

I have to say during my time at the agency I picked up skills that I will keep with me as I go forward into my career after University. However, I wanted to delve deeper into the mind of a journalist and what they see in a newsworthy story, which is why I selected the News and Journalism module as part of my final year. Over the next couple of months I will be publishing a series of blogs surrounding the different elements of journalism including different genres, techniques and issues surrounding it. So, watch this space!
